Our Vision

Linking the past and the future: A mobility center for everyone

There is currently no place in Düsseldorf where the history and importance of public transport for urban development and the quality of life of the citizens can be clearly seen and experienced by the public.

It is the aim of "Line D" to preserve the Steinberg as an industrial monument for the historic railroads and to make it a place where not only the past remains alive, but where there is also room for topics of mobility in the future.

THE LAST CHANCE: Historic trams in the historic depot

In the over 100-year-old building of the depot in Düsseldorf-Bilk, the last of its kind in Düsseldorf, there is the opportunity to realize a lively mobility center in a fascinating authentic environment that will find interested parties and friends far beyond the city and offer new opportunities for experience and leisure.

For the farewell of the depot Am Steinberg in 2011, most of the vehicle types will once again be assembled in a parade in the tracks of the depot.

Düsseldorf's transport history: much more than just streetcars and buses

The history of transport is one aspect of Düsseldorf's multifaceted development into an industrial and service metropolis over the last 150 years. The oldest existing streetcar depot in Düsseldorf, Am Steinberg, can offer an authentic space for topics from the past to the future:

  • The development of urban transport
  • The interaction of urban and traffic development
  • The special significance of Rheinbahn for the development of the city and the region as well as for innovative transport concepts
  • Düsseldorf as a traditional location of the German vehicle industry
  • The importance of mobility for the quality of life and prosperity of the population
  • Local public transport as a resource-saving transport system of the future

The essential prerequisites in Düsseldorf to present these topics in a lively attractive center exist. The resources available today at the Am Steinberg streetcar depot, an industrial monument, are unique in western Germany and in neighboring countries.

The depot: The center of the Düsseldorf rail network

The depot "Am Steinberg" was put into operation by the Düsseldorf tramway in the Bilk district in 1908. Due to its reinforced concrete construction, which is reminiscent of a sacred building, and its significance for urban development, the two main halls have been listed as historic monuments since 1996.

The streetcars: On the road with Düsseldorf's citizens

Düsseldorf has a large number of historically valuable - for the most part operational - streetcar vehicles that were previously stationed at the Am Steiberg depot. Around 30 vehicles represent all stages in the development of urban public transport from 1920 to the present day. The vehicles can travel on almost all routes of the Rheinbahn's extensive streetcar network.

The vehicles are in motion to the delight of young and old. So far, they have been used around 400 times a year on Düsseldorf's route network for city tours,  special and charter trips.

The vision of Line D: A concept for many interested people

  • The city's diverse cultural landscape is further completed. So far, one has searched in vain for an institution dedicated to the topics of traffic history in Düsseldorf. Existing ones can be used to supplement the offer.
  • Riding historic streetcars is fun! Looking over the shoulder of the streetcar driver and the conductor at their work during a trip to Steinberg or on a city tour is a pleasure for all generations.
  • The historical building is an attractive place for exhibitions and events, which can be used by many in many ways, by different groups, clubs and companies.

"Line D" is convinced that this mobility center, which uses existing things, has a healthy economic basis through its many possibilities.
